About Germany

Geography:

1. Germany has about 82.000.000 inhabitants.
2. At the moment 7.32 million foreigners live in Germany.
3. The symbol of Germany is the 'Branderburger Tor'. It's a big stone gate in Germany's capital Berlin.
4. Germany consists of 16 federal states which cover a size of 375.000 square kilometres.
5. The Rhine is the largest river in Germany.
6. A part of the famous Alps is in Germany.


Politics/history:

7. Germany is a democratic nation with the chancellor Gehard Schröeder.
8. A lot of German people can't be proud of their country because of Adolf Hitler and his national socialist dictatorship in the second world war.
9. After the second world war a wall was built, which divided Germany into west (FRG) and east (GDR).
10. The "Branderburger Tor" was a part of a wall which split Germany into East and West Berlin.

11. Then, in November 1989 the wall was destroyed, and Germany was united again.
12. One year later, the German soccer team won the important World Cup in Italy.
13. Albert Einstein invented the famous theory of relativity.
14. X-Ray was invented by Wilhelm Roentgen, that's why Germans call them Roentgen-ray.
15. Germany has got lots old cities with historical background, like Cologne, Xanten or Rothenburg ob der Tauber.


Oktoberfest and Carnival

Culture:

16. In Bavaria (in the South of Germany) there is a big party called "Oktoberfest" every autumn.
17. Germany is famous for the food: "potatoes and dumpling" or "Currywurst" (a sausage with curry-sauce).
18. The carnival parades in Germany are very big, for example Aachen, Cologne and Mainz.

19. In Germany we drive the cars on the right side of the road.
20. Goethe and Shiller were famous poets and authors.
21. The "Koelner Dom" is a very big and popular cathedral in Cologne.

Economy and public transport:

22. Germany is the third biggest manumacturer in the world and German cars like BMW or Daimler are famous worldwide.
23. The biggest and most important airport of Germany is Frankfurt.

24. Only in Germany there is the 'Schwebebahn' (that's a train hanging on rails). It's in Wupertal.
25. The harbour of Hamburg is a famous harbour in the world.
