About Latvia

A little 'green' ant

Hi!I think Latvia is like a little, little ant in the big world. Life is going in the same way like in other places, but not so fast.

Map
Ventspils
There are four regions in Latvia: Vidzeme, Zemgale, Latgale, Kurzeme. There is also the fifth region: Selija. Eyes of Latvia is City Ventspils, which looks at waiving Baltic sea.
The crown of Latvia is Kolkas horn, a place were the sea meets te gulf of Riga.
Kolkas horn
Liepaja
Mouth of Latvia is Liepaja, which speaks in the wind language.
The hair of Latvia sparkles like amber stones, which are washed out by the sea.
In the middle of Latvia, like a national belt streams Daugava, the river of fate.
Daugava river
Vidzeme
The skirt of Latvia is the brown Vidzeme and Kurzeme, the blue lake land.
Grassland, woods, fields of these regions gives other colors in the belt of Latvia.
My favourite city is Ventspils. It is a city by the sea in Kurzeme. Ventspils is a clean and in the every quarter there is something interesting: flower clock, children city, flower decorations. The most important object is the Livonia order castle. It is successfully restored. In Ventspils there also is a monument (chair), in the coast of river Venta. It is the statue of Krisjanis Valdemars the man of the first Latvian sea school founder. Everyone can sit side by side with this famous man, it is a pity that someone is taking glasses from this statue.

Vecriga

The capital city of Latvia is Riga, I live in it. My favourite place is Old Riga (Vecriga).
The old churches and roadways are remained there. All the other places aren't so different like in other countries, like shopping malls and stores.
I think Latvia is the richest. Not in money, but in the nature.

For me Latvia is very loved.

Latvia is in Europe, in the Baltic states. Latvia is a little country, but it has a big importance in world history. Because it is located by the Baltic sea which has given chances to do fishing and sailing for many centuries. In the Middle ages many countries wanted to have these lands and they fought for it.

Port

Our land is rich with woods and grasslands. Some of the people from another countries think that it is a great tresure.

Nature

Hi!
My name is Liene.
I will tell you what can you do in each season, in Latvia.
In winter you can ride with sled, have a snow fight and celebrate Christmas.
In autumn you can watch the colourful trees.
In summer you can sunbath or swim.
In spring you can watch the beautiful nature.

I think you liked it, and you will visit Latvia.

Hallo!
My name is Marta I live in the beautiful country Latvia. In Latvia the time is always beautiful in all seasons, maybe not in winter, because then all the green grass and trees are under snow. I think the most beautiful season is autumn, specially in Sigulda, from the castle walls you can see woods like red sea.

Autumn

There are many different castles in Latvia.
Riga is one the most beautiful cities in Europe. In 2001 Riga celebrated its 800 birthday. Many houses in Riga are built in Jugend (Modern, Secession) style.
There are also many wooden houses, but they are in suburbs.
When you visit Latvia you need to go to the Latvian Ethnography museum. There you learn the history and culture of these land.
We celebrate many national festivals. Like Jani (summer solstice) and Kekatas iesanu (in winter solstice and marriage). These festivals are nice and full of joy.
I prefer you go to Latgales blue lakes, seaside of Kurzeme and the highest hill in Latvia Gaizinkalns (only 312 m. above the sea level).

You have to visit and travel Latvia.

Festivities and nature

"The Latvians belong to the nations who mainly dealt with agriculture and cattle breeding. Thus, they have always been dependent on certain rhythm dictated by the nature. Winter and summer solstice, as well as spring and autumn equinox were the most important moments in their lives."

Autumn sets in with St.Mikelis Day (on 29th of September) – by this day the harvesting had to be accomplished. Today, a particular feature of this day is organisation of autumn fairs.

"After this day, the so- called period of the ghosts begins. According to opinion of Latvians, it was the time when the dead ancestry visited them."

"The period of ghosts ends in Martini (10th of November) – that is considered as the beginning of winter."
