About Uruguay

Oriental Republic of Uruguay is our country's official name. It means the country that is to the east of the Uruguay river.

Geography

  • Uruguay is located in south America, between Brazil and Argentina.
  • Uruguay has a territory of 176,215 km2.
  • The country is divided in 19 departaments.
  • Uruguay is a flat country, its higest point is cerro Catedral, 514 m high.
  • There are many rivers in Uruguay. The most important rivers are the Uruguay river and the Rio Negro.
  • To the south, Uruguay falls into the sea, into de River Plate and the Atlantic Ocean. Uruguayan coast line is many km long.

Natural Resources

  • Uruguay is very rich in natural resources.
  • We have: water, many kinds of animals, an abundant flora, rich soil, semi-precious stones and beautiful ocean beaches.

History:

  • Uruguay was conquered by Spain, Portugal and England.
  • It was ruled by the Spanish for many years.
  • There was a war for independence and Uruguay became a free country in 1811.
  • José Gervasio Artigas is our national hero.

Culture:

  • Uruguayans drink mate (a hot drink made with hot water and a plant called yerba-mate. It is drank from a natural pot with a silver straw).
  • We eat roast meat that we call "asado".

Climate:

  • The climate in Uruguay is temperate.
  • It does not rain much.
  • The highest temperature in Summer is 30ºC and the lowest temperature in Winter is 5ºC.

Industry:

  • Our main production is livestock and agriculture.
  • Other important industries are: tourism and software development.

Places to visit:

Uruguay offers many different places to visit, some of them historical, beaches, hills, parks.

  • Montevideo:

Montevideo is the capital city. It offers beaches, a beautiful seaside walk, museums, restaurants, hotels, etc., it combines modern and old buildings and it has a lot of open, green spaces.

Colonia del Sacramento
  • Colonia del Sacramento:

Colonia is a colonial city. It was the first city to be founded in Uruguay by the Portuguese. The atmosphere in Colonia takes you to the past.

  • Punta del Este:

One of the most famous seaside resorts in the region. People from all over the world visit Punta del Este. It offers beautiful ocean beaches, lots of shops, a sports port, de-luxe hotels, restaurants and casinos. Punta del Este is very sophisticated.

  • Salto:

It is a city in the north of the country. Salto offers thermal water resorts and fabulous water parks.

  • Minas

It is a small city located in the centre of the country. It is surrounded by green hills.
