I am a spider crab. My scientific name is “Maja Squinado”.
My body is heart-shaped, and a bulging, spiky shell covers it.
I have ten articulated legs, very long and hard.
My first pair of legs end in two claws.
|
I live on the shore, in rocky or sandy bottoms. I feed on little animals.
I am very peaceful and calm.
Yo vivo en la costa, en fondos rocosos. If I feel in danger, I run to hide among the rocks. I cover myself with seaweed.

I change my shell periodically. This is called moulting, and I do it while growing.
Males and the females are different: males have a little and narrow abdomen; females have a broader one and it is rounded.
|
We breed in summer: We gather in large groups, where males form a circle round the females to protect them from predators.

People catch us with creels, and sometimes with trammels.
French and Galician spider crabs are sold in markets.
|
Cooked in salted water with bay leaves the spider crab is a delicacy.
